Westran Scholarships Awarded T0 24 Students

August 2007 – [Lansing, MI] The next tuition payment will be a little easier for the 24 Michigan students that have been awarded $2,000 scholarships from the Westran Insurance Scholarship Foundation.

The Westran Insurance Scholarship Foundation was established in 1990 in honor of Roy E. Westran, former president of Citizens Insurance, former board chairman of Accident Fund and longtime industry mentor and community leader. Mr. Westran passed away in 2006, and his son, Tom Westran, has taken his place on the Foundation’s board.

Students were notified about the scholarships in July 2007. Several of them were on hand during the Roy Westran Memorial Insurance Industry Golf Outing, which was held August 3 at Hawk Hollow Golf Course in Bath, Michigan. This year’s outing, the major fundraiser for the scholarships, raised more than $40,000.

Developing the insurance industry’s next generation of leaders was something Westran not only preached, he considered it part of his job, according to Liz Haar, Accident Fund president & CEO.

“The Westran Insurance Scholarship Foundation is a great organization and we support their continued efforts to bring young people to the insurance industry,” says Haar. “The Foundation scholarships are a way for us to encourage young professionals to look at an insurance career.”

The Foundation provides funds to students pursuing college degrees in insurance-related programs. Since being established, more than $536,000 has been raised and distributed to more than 300 students.

Headquartered in Lansing, Michigan, Accident Fund Insurance Company of America is one of the largest writers of workers compensation insurance in the United States. The company also provides third party administration services and disability management. Founded in 1912, Accident Fund is rated “A” (Excellent) by A.M. Best.
