July 2, 2008 (LANSING, MICHIGAN) – Accident Fund Insurance Company of America,
downtown Lansing’s
largest private-sector employer, today unveiled detailed
plans for its new corporate home in the
next step of its planned transformation of the Lansing Board
of Water & Light’s Ottawa Street
Station power plant into its national headquarters. “We are proud to be a part of the transformation of this
magnificent building and the future
development of downtown Lansing,” said Elizabeth R. Haar,
president and CEO, Accident
Fund. “We can’t wait to share this exceptional new home with
our employees, customers,
business partners and the entire Mid-Michigan community.” Joined by Daniel J. Loepp, president and CEO, Blue Cross
Blue Shield of Michigan, Lansing
Mayor Virg Bernero and Steven Roznowski, president and CEO,
The Christman Company, Haar
presented today new renderings, an architectural scale model
and a 3D video “fly-through” of the
unique, 333,000 square foot future headquarters, which will
be highlighted by five key elements:
the atrium, top floor meeting room, café/gathering space,
wellness area and cutting edge
technology. The four-story atrium will serve as the connecting feature
between the refurbished Ottawa Street
Station property and the building’s new addition. Glass
ceilings will provide unique views of the
station tower from nearly every angle, and allow employees
and visitors access to both areas of
the campus without having to travel outside. The building's interior will amply represent Accident Fund’s
place as a national industry leader,
reflecting the organization’s significant volume, stature
and expertise. Housed on one of the
building’s top floors will be meeting space equipped with
cutting-edge technology and
multimedia capabilities for customer presentations and other
business functions. To add vibrancy to the riverfront, space is set aside to
beckon people outdoors. Located on the
lower level of the new addition and extending into the
atrium, the café and gathering space will
feature an outdoor patio offering employees the opportunity
to dine al fresco when weather
permits.
Helping its employees stay healthy and lowering health costs
is a commitment by Accident Fund
that will continue in its new location. The new headquarters
will incorporate a wellness space
large and flexible enough to adequately house the program as
it evolves. In a continuing effort to provide the best and most
efficient service to customers, overall use of
technology at the Accident Fund campus will be vastly
improved, including wireless accessibility
throughout. Expanded technical capabilities in training and
conference rooms will provide
employees and visitors with ample meeting and education
space, with all meeting rooms
equipped with identical, standardized high-tech features. Construction on Accident Fund’s new seven-acre campus,
including the development of a 1,000-car parking structure, will begin in 2009 and is expected to
be completed by mid-2011. Upon
completion of the project, Accident Fund will pursue a
listing for its new headquarters on the
National Register of Historic Places and also LEEDTM
(Leadership on Energy Efficient Design)
certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
